Karyotypes of four species of Xenodontini snakes (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) and implications for taxonomy Naturalis
Falcione, C.; Hernando, A.; Barrasso, D.A.; Pietro, D. di.
The karyotypes of four South American Xenodontini snake species, Lygophis dilepis, L. meridionalis, L. flavifrenatus and L. anomalus, are here described for the first time. We studied specimens from northeastern Argentina using conventional and silver (Ag-NOR) staining. While the typical ophidian karyotype is 2n = 36, we found that the karyotype of the studied species is 2n = 34, with metacentric and submetacentric chromosome pairs. The Ag-NOR staining revealed that nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are located on one pair of microchromosomes. In L. dilepis and L. anomalus the 4th chromosome pair is heteromorphic, and we suggest that it might be considered as the ZW sex chromosome pair. The optimization of available karyological data on a molecular...

Mediterranean intermediate circulation estimated from Argo data in 2003-2010 ArchiMer
Menna, M.; Poulain, P. M..
Data from 38 Argo profiling floats are used to describe the intermediate Mediterranean currents for the period October 2003-January 2010. These floats were programmed to execute 5-day cycles, to drift at a neutral parking depth of 350 m and measure temperature and salinity profiles from either 700 or 2000 m up to the surface. At the end of each cycle the floats remained at the sea surface for about 6 h, enough time to be localised and transmit the data to the Argos satellite system. The Argos positions were used to determine the float surface and intermediate displacements. At the surface, the float motion was approximated by a linear displacement and inertial motion. Intermediate velocities estimates were used to investigate the Mediterranean circulation...

Mesoscale eddy variability in the southern extension of the East Madagascar Current: Seasonal cycle, energy conversion terms, and eddy mean properties ArchiMer
Halo, Issufo; Penven, Pierrick; Backeberg, Bjoern; Ansorge, Isabelle; Shillington, Frank; Roman, Raymond.
In this study, we used more than 17 years of satellite altimetry observations and output from an ocean model to investigate the mesoscale eddy variability and forcing mechanisms to the south of Madagascar. Analysis of energy conversion terms in the model has shown seasonality on eddy formation, both by barotropic and baroclinic instabilities: maximum in winter (JJA) and minimum in summer (DJF). The eddies were mainly formed in the upper ocean (0–300 m) and at intermediate depths (800–2000 m) by barotropic and baroclinic instabilities, respectively. The former dominated in the southeastern margin of Madagascar, and the latter to the southwest, where the South-East Madagascar Current (SEMC) separates from the continental shelf. Seasonality of the eddy...

Mitochondrial genetic variability of Didelphis albiventris (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) in Brazilian localities Genet. Mol. Biol.
Sousa,Luciene C.C.; Gontijo,Célia M.F.; Botelho,Helbert A.; Fonseca,Cleusa G..
Didelphis albiventris is a well-known and common marsupial. Due to its high adaptability, this very widespread generalist species occurs under various environmental conditions, this even including protected regions and disturbed urban areas. We studied a 653 bp fragment of cytochrome oxidase c (COI) from 93 biological samples from seven Brazilian localities, with linear distances ranging between 58 and about 1800 km to analyze the effects of geographic distances on variability and genetic differentiation. The haplotype network presented nine haplotypes and two genetic clusters compatible with the two most distant geographic areas of the states of Minas Gerais, in the southeast, and Rio Grande do Sul, in the extreme south. As each cluster was characterized...

Modelling Climate Change and Agricultural Production in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): In Quest of Statistics AgEcon
Koffi-Tessio, Egnonto M..
Climate change is a natural and dynamic phenomenon resulting from complex interrelationships between physical, environmental and human factors. The sustainability of life on earth depends partly on the ability of mankind to maintain this natural and balanced flow of such gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor traping heat. Unfortunately, human beings contribute significantly to the presence of such gases known as Green House Gases (GHGs) through agricultural and industrial activities. The implications are the excess trap of sunlight and the blocking of outward radiation. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the importance of agriculture cannot be stressed enough given that it is central to economic growth and most of economic activities in the region...

Molecular characterization of GSyV-1 and GLRaV-3 and prevalence of grapevine viruses in a grape-growing area Scientia Agricola
Moura,Cátia Jacira Martins de; Fajardo,Thor Vinícius Martins; Eiras,Marcelo; Silva,Fábio Nascimento da; Nickel,Osmar.
ABSTRACT: The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of viruses in 119 samples from 32 grapevine cultivars, collected from nine vineyards in a specific grape-growing area in southeastern Brazil, perform a partial molecular characterization of 14 isolates of Grapevine Syrah virus 1 (GSyV-1) and Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3 (GLRaV-3) and assess the coat protein genetic variability of these viruses. The detection of viruses was implemented by real-time RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) aiming to detect seven viruses and one viroid. With the exception of the Grapevine Cabernet Sauvignon reovirus (GCSV), the viruses and viroid that were evaluated were widespread in the sampled areas, often in high prevalence and...

Molecular fingerprinting of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae isolates using AFLP markers Scientia Agricola
Silva,Aline dos Santos; Oliveira,Eder Jorge de; Haddad,Fernando; Jesus,Onildo Nunes de; Oliveira,Saulo Alves Santos de; Costa,Maria Angélica Pereira de Carvalho.
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae W.L. Gordon (FOP) is one of the most important fungal pathogens of passion fruits. Understanding molecular variation of isolates from different areas is of utmost importance. Molecular fingerprinting on 14 isolates of FOP were conducted using AFLP molecular markers (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism), and their genetic variability were estimated. Twenty-five AFLP primer combinations were selected for amplification of FOP isolates and one for Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense W.C. Snyder & H.N. Hansen (FOC), resulting in 99% polymorphic fragments, with an average of 40 fragments per primer combination. Specific fingerprints could be generated for most of the isolates evaluated; we observed a high power of...

MOLECULAR VARIABILITY OF THREE GENES OF POTATO VEIN YELLOW VIRUS INFECTING Solanum tuberosum, USING SINGLE STRAND CONFORMATIONAL POLYMORPHISM Acta biol.Colomb.
CUBILLOS-ABELLO,Karen Andrea; GUZMÁN BARNEY,María Mónica.
Potato yellow vein virus (PYVV), a virus with tripartite RNA (ss+) genome is classified as member of the genus Crinivirus within the family Closteoviridae. PYVV is the causal agent of potato yellow vein disease (PYVD) with yield loss between 25 %-50 % in field. Single strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) has been reported to estimate variability in different viruses' species. In this study, the molecular variability of PYVV analyzed by SSCP patterns of three genes: major capsid protein (CP), minor capsid protein (CPm), and heat shock protein (Hsp70) obtained from 60 virus isolates from potato plants expressing PYVD. Leaves collected in Nariño, Colombia from 30 Solanum tuberosum Phureja Group (PhG) and 30 from the Andigena Group (AG). Genes amplified...

More adequate probability distributions to represent the saturated soil hydraulic conductivity Scientia Agricola
Mesquita,Maria da Glória Bastos de Freitas; Moraes,Sérgio Oliveira; Corrente,José Eduardo.
The saturated soil hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) is one of the most relevant variables in studies of water and solute movement in the soil. Its determination in the laboratory and in the field yields high dispersion results, which could be an indication that this variable has a no symmetrical distribution. Adjustment of the normal, lognormal, gamma and beta distributions were examined in order to search for a probability were density function that would more adequately describe the distribution of this variable. The experiment consisted in determining the saturated hydraulic conductivity, through the constant head permeameter method, in undisturbed samples of three soils of different textures from the central western region of the São Paulo State, Brazil,...

Morfología de frutos, perfil de ácidos grasos en semilla y diversidad genética molecular en selecciones de zapote mamey (Pouteria sapota (Jacq.) H. E. Moore & Stearn). Colegio de Postgraduados
Ibarra Estrada, Martha Elva.
Multidecadal variability of the overturning circulation in presence of eddy turbulence ArchiMer
Huck, Thierry; Arzel, Olivier; Sevellec, Florian.
At low-resolution, idealized ocean circulation models forced by prescribed differential surface heat fluxes show spontaneous multidecadal variability depending critically on eddy diffusivity coefficients. The existence of this critical threshold in the range of observational estimates legitimates some doubt on the relevance of such intrinsic oscillations in the real ocean. Through a series of numerical simulations with increasing resolution up to eddy-resolving ones (10 km) and various diapycnal diffusivities, this multidecadal variability proves a generic ubiquitous feature, at least in model versions with a flat bottom. The mean circulation largely changes in the process of refining the horizontal grid (along with the associated implicit viscosity and...

Ocean-Atmosphere Coupling in the Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillation: A Simple Model Study ArchiMer
Bellon, Gilles; Sobel, Adam H.; Vialard, Jerome.
A simple coupled model is used in a zonally symmetric aquaplanet configuration to investigate the effect of ocean-atmosphere coupling on the Asian monsoon intraseasonal oscillation. The model consists of a linear atmospheric model of intermediate complexity based on quasi-equilibrium theory coupled to a simple, linear model of the upper ocean. This model has one unstable eigenmode with a period in the 30-60-day range and a structure similar to the observed northward-propagating intraseasonal oscillation in the Bay of Bengal/west Pacific sector. The ocean-atmosphere coupling is shown to have little impact on either the growth rate or latitudinal structure of the atmospheric oscillation, but it reduces the oscillation's period by a quarter. At latitudes...

On the Movements of the North Atlantic Subpolar Front in the Preinstrumental Past* ArchiMer
Marchal, Olivier; Waelbroeck, Claire; Colin De Verdiere, Alain.
Three sediment records of sea surface temperature (SST) are analyzed that originate from distant locations in the North Atlantic, have centennial-to-multicentennial resolution, are based on the same reconstruction method and chronological assumptions, and span the past 15 000 yr. Using recursive least squares techniques, an estimate of the time-dependent North Atlantic SST field over the last 15 kyr is sought that is consistent with both the SST records and a surface ocean circulation model, given estimates of their respective error (co)variances. Under the authors' assumptions about data and model errors, it is found that the 10 degrees C mixed layer isotherm, which approximately traces the modern Subpolar Front, would have moved by ~15 degrees of...

On the ocean salinity stratification observed at the eastern edge of the equatorial Pacific warm pool ArchiMer
Maes, Christophe.
The observations collected during a series of three oceanographic cruises dedicated to the study of the frontal zone at the eastern edge of the equatorial Pacific warm pool are used to study the role of salinity in the static stratification of the ocean upper layers. By combining physical and biogeochemical data, the position of the frontal zone at the surface could be accurately determined between 157.5 degrees E and 173.4 degrees E. A multiparameter approach is required due to the uncertainty that may result when one parameter is only considered. In the subsurface the thermohaline structures around the frontal zone reveal the predominant role of the ocean salinity stratification within the isothermal layers. However, the actual methods to determine the...

On which timescales do gas transfer velocities control North Atlantic CO2 flux variability? ArchiMer
Couldrey, Matthew P.; Oliver, Kevin I. C.; Yool, Andrew; Halloran, Paul R.; Achterberg, Eric P..
The North Atlantic is an important basin for the global ocean's uptake of anthropogenic and natural carbon dioxide (CO2), but the mechanisms controlling this carbon flux are not fully understood. The air-sea flux of CO2, F, is the product of a gas transfer velocity, k, the air-sea CO2 concentration gradient, Delta pCO(2), and the temperature-and salinity-dependent solubility coefficient, alpha, k is difficult to constrain, representing the dominant uncertainty in F on short (instantaneous to interannual) timescales. Previous work shows that in the North Atlantic, Delta pCO(2) and k both contribute significantly to interannual F variability but that k is unimportant for multidecadal variability. On some timescale between interannual and multidecadal, gas...

Origin, formation and variability of the Subpolar Mode Water located over the Reykjanes Ridge ArchiMer
De Boisseson, Eric; Thierry, Virginie; Mercier, Herle; Caniaux, G.; Desbruyeres, Damien.
The origin and formation of the Subpolar Mode Water (SPMW) located over the Reykjanes Ridge in the North-Atlantic Ocean and the variability of its properties over the period 1966-2004 are investigated through the use of a global eddy-permitting (1/4 degrees) ocean/sea-ice model and a Lagrangian analysis tool. The SPMW is fed by subtropical and subpolar waters advected by the branches of the North-Atlantic Current. The SPMW acquires its properties when its source waters enter the winter mixed layer in the Iceland Basin. The SPMW temperature variability is mainly explained by variations of the relative contributions of the subtropical and subpolar water transports to the total transport. Compared to the 1966-2004 mean, lower (higher) subtropical water...
